Johnson & Johnson MedTech

Healthcare & Medical

Company overview

Johnson & Johnson MedTech is one of the world’s largest medical technology providers, spanning everything from robotic surgery to orthopaedic implants and cardiovascular interventions. Hardware systems include the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution for knee replacement, the DUALTO Energy System for advanced surgical energy, and a wide portfolio of spinal and trauma implants. Beyond the hardware, J&J has built a growing digital layer: its Polyphonic Digital Ecosystem links surgical devices with cloud-based workflow tools, analytics, and collaboration platforms, designed to standardize surgical practice and give hospitals more visibility into outcomes and costs. By connecting devices, data, and surgeons, J&J is moving from a product-centric to a systems-driven business.

The commercial model increasingly blends capital sales with recurring digital subscriptions, akin to a hybrid recurring sales model. Hospitals may purchase surgical systems or implants outright, but continued value comes from Polyphonic Fleet, which enables device monitoring, predictive maintenance, and remote support on a subscription basis. Software applications such as workflow optimization, surgical video management, and data-driven analytics are licensed on ongoing contracts, creating a recurring revenue stream layered on top of device deployments. For hospitals, this reduces downtime, shifts more spend to operating budgets, and ensures systems stay current with regular updates. For J&J, it provides predictable service revenue, deeper customer lock-in, and continuous data feedback that strengthens the ecosystem.

“What’s next in surgery is a more connected experience for patients, healthcare teams, and hospitals as we bring forward the value of surgical data,” said Hani Abouhalka, Company Group Chairman, Surgery at Johnson & Johnson MedTech. “Building on our extensive network of surgical technologies and surgical software solutions deployed in operating rooms around the world, we are prioritizing collaboration and open innovation for a more human, more adaptive, and more connected surgery experience.”
