Company overview

Komatsu develops and manufactures equipment that powers some of the world’s largest construction and mining operations. Its portfolio includes hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, bulldozers, dump trucks, and autonomous haulage systems, complemented by Smart Construction solutions for digital jobsite management and Komtrax telematics built into nearly every machine. These systems collect and analyze data on fuel consumption, idle time, operator behavior, and equipment health to optimize performance and reduce downtime. Through My Komatsu, users can access fleet insights, order parts, schedule service, and integrate with third-party tools, creating a unified digital ecosystem that connects hardware, operators, and workflows in real time. Together, these technologies enable predictive maintenance, AI-assisted site optimization, and measurable gains in productivity, safety, and sustainability across job sites.
Komatsu’s business model is hybrid HaaS, combining traditional equipment sales with subscription- and usage-based services. Customers typically purchase machines as capital assets but subscribe to ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and digital-support programs. For example, Komatsu Care Plus Cost Per Hour provides a fixed-rate, usage-based maintenance plan—covering scheduled service, telematics connectivity, and technical support—billed according to actual operating hours. These subscription layers extend equipment lifecycles, stabilize operating costs, and strengthen long-term relationships across Komatsu’s customer base.
“Sensors on components help us monitor durability,” explains Hiroyuki Ogawa, Chairman of the Board and former CEO. “This enables us to suggest repairs at the appropriate time based on the data. By understanding the durability and reliability of components, we can offer extended warranty contracts with periodic maintenance, which allows customers to use our equipment with confidence.”
