Zauberzeug

The Field Friend is a compact, track-driven agricultural robot built for mechanical weed control without herbicides. Weighing under fifty kilograms, it moves through crop rows with minimal ground pressure, preserving soil structure where heavier machinery would cause compaction. Onboard cameras feed images to an AI system trained through Zauberzeug's proprietary Learning Loop, which distinguishes crops from weeds in real time and improves its accuracy as more farms contribute field data. The robot mounts standard, custom, or third-party tool attachments—switching between weeding, sowing, inspecting, and fertilizing—and multiple units coordinate in swarms across larger fields. Processing runs locally on the Robot Brain, a compact edge computer that handles AI inference, navigation, and machine control without relying on cloud connectivity. The entire software stack runs on RoSys, Zauberzeug's open source Python-based robot operating system, giving operators and developers full access to the codebase for customization.

Rather than requiring farms to buy a €25,000 robot outright, Zauberzeug built its commercial model around a robots-as-a-service offering it calls Weeding as a Service. Zauberzeug owns and operates the robots, billing farmers by the hour for weed control performed—no capital outlay for equipment, no maintenance responsibility, and no need to hire an operator. Setup, scheduling, field coordination, and ongoing support are all included. The service launched regionally in the Münsterland area of Germany in Spring 2026, with the initial rollout limited geographically to ensure service quality before expanding. The Field Friend is also available for direct purchase, and the open source Robot Brain creates a secondary channel: third-party developers can build on RoSys and extend Zauberzeug's platform into adjacent automation markets.
